Although all slides can be considered sandals, not all sandals would be called slides.
Slides are essentially any sandal that you can slide your foot right into. No complicated straps. No toe separation. Just an effortless slide right on. The style of slides has progressed far beyond shower shoes and are taking the fashion world by storm. Slides are available in sporty, dressy or casual styles. Open toed and backless, everyone loves slides for their naked and comfortable feel. If you want to be barefoot without the risk, slides are as good as it gets. As the original form of footwear, slides have truly stood the test of time. Whether you rock them flat or with an elevated look like a platform or a heel, slides can truly be worn with most any outfit and can be suited for most occasions. Easily packable and versatile, a good pair (or pairs!) of slides are an essential for travelers and anyone on the go.
What’s different about sandals? While the term sandals can also be used to describe slides, sandals are more often referred to as an open shoe with a toe strap and/or a back. Near the front of a sandal, you’ll often find a Y-shaped strap that typically goes in between your big toe separating it from the rest. You may also find a back piece to a sandal, this may or may not include a strap around the ankle. Generally speaking, sandals are closer in form to the shape of your foot while slides come with a chunkier silhouette.
When it comes to a decision between wearing Italian slides or sandals, here are a few things to consider: Slides can sometimes mean less fuss. There are no straps, buckles, or ties needed to keep them on. Sandals may offer a dressier look. Depending on the occasion, the straps, ties, or buckles may elevate your ensemble. Sandals may stay on your feet better. Slides can tend to, well, slide off. Slides are trendy. Making appearances in anywhere from fashion magazines to the red carpet. This classic footwear style has been revamped in recent years to take you anywhere.
Whether you prefer sandals, or slides, you probably love them for their versatility and comfort. There’s not much better than footwear that is comfortable and easy … but what’s even better than that? Footwear that is also made to last. Handcrafted in Italy, Italeau’s shoes - including our sandals and slides - are made from fine waterproof leather to stand the test of time.
The term “sandals” is really used as an umbrella category for an entire slew of subcategories of footwear. Read on to learn about different styles of sandals.
Flip Flops. California dreaming? Flip flops may be the original beach shoe but don’t let their purpose stop at the sand. Basic flip flops are made from rubber, but the timelessly styled footwear can be made with any material, pattern or print. Take the original look up a notch with leather flip flops. From the beach to a rock concert, leather flops are extremely versatile and much more durable than a rubber pair. The classic Y-shaped strap that goes between your big toe and its neighbor connects through the bottom of the sole, making flip flops a bit less likely to slip off your feet than slides. Flip flops are casual and comfy for your everyday errands. Lightweight and comfortable, flip flops can be put on quickly and just as easily as a slide.
Slides. As previously mentioned, slides are trendy, versatile and functional. Slides are defined by the single strap that goes across the top of your foot, connecting one side of the sole to the other. Slides can take you from the beach to the red carpet depending on their style and how you dress them. Strap styles vary widely from braided, to chunky and everything in between making them easy to dress up or down. One of the benefits of wearing slides is the ability to pair with socks. Socks and slides aren’t just for dorky dads anymore. Socks with your slides can be trendy, comfortable and cozy. For a sleek look, match the color of your socks to your shoe. Crew socks with a coordinating color band make for trendy streetwear.
Peep toe. Sounds self-explanatory, right? It is. Peep toe sandals are almost complete foot covering shoes, minus the toe. Peep toes are perfect for cooler temperatures to keep your feet warm. You can pair a cute peep toe with just about anything, but they work especially well in a business casual setting. For a more formal look, try a peep toe with some slacks or a long gown.
Wedges. Sandals with a wedged sole make you appear taller. If heels aren’t your thing, wedged sandals are a great substitute. Wedges differ from heels in how exactly the height is added. With a thicker and more spread-out heel area, wedges are often more comfortable and stable than classic heels. Wedges also provide more arch support, making wearing them for hours much more feasible.
Slingbacks. Slingback sandals have a strap that wraps behind the ankle, offering stability and practicality. Slingbacks come in wedges, heels, and flats making them a versatile style that can pair with any outfit for any occasion. If you love a good pair of heels but need something more practical... slingbacks are the perfect solution.
Strappy sandals. Sandals with skinny straps give your legs a longer appearance. Varying in heel length, the wardrobe possibilities with a strappy sandal are endless.
Sandals are incredibly versatile and vary greatly in style. There are sandals for every occasion! They won’t be going out of style anytime either. In fact, the earliest example of a sandal that has been found is thought to be nearly 11,000 years old. This sandal was made of sagebrush bark. In ancient Egypt, sandals made of leather and papyrus were reserved for the upper class and royalty. Sandals made with skin of cattle, twigs and leaves were the footwear of choice in ancient Rome and Greece. In fact, Greek God Hermes is pictured wearing winged sandals.
In more modern times, different styles of sandals have been popular. Peep toe sandals were what many women wore in the early 1900’s. Peep toes rose in popularity again in the 80’s and 90’s. Today, this classy shoe has been revamped in the form of wedges and boots! Strappy sandals also took over the 90’s and are often seen today with a “barely there” heel. Although they are thought to be the earliest form of footwear, slides are very popular still and have certainly come a long way. Arguably one of the most fashionable sandals by today’s standards, slides come in many different looks and cuts. Slides are almost essential to stylish streetwear.
Sandals and slides can certainly be dressed up or dressed down. Between the enormous selection of styles, colors and materials – there are sandals for every occasion. Here are some examples of how to pair your airy footwear with an outfit to suit any event.
Casual. When you’d like to look great and be comfortable but don’t require anything fancy, flip flops are an excellent choice. A favorite in today’s trends are flip flops with some flared jeans and a tighter silhouetted top. Flip flops also look amazing with a pair of yoga pants and athleisure wear in general. For a nonchalant vibe, wear some flip flops with longer pants or a skirt. A quality pair of leather flip flops will elevate your look more than a rubber pair – though rubber is perfect for hanging by the pool.
Business casual. Although working in the office and open toed anything don’t always go hand in hand, there are exceptions. A classy peep toe in brown or black can work well in a business casual office setting. Reach for a peep toe with a heel height and pair them with slacks and a blazer for a powerful, feminine look. Slingbacks can work in an office setting as well. A classic business casual outfit may include a knee length skirt with a pair of flat slingbacks.
Formal. Strappy sandals with or without a heel can look great in a formal setting. If you are wearing sandals with extra buckles or bling, be sure to not overdo your jewelry and accessories. On the other hand, if you are pairing simpler sandals with your formal wear, dress up your outfit with a complimenting necklace or earrings.
For a truly anytime and anywhere pair of sandals, try Italeau. Our waterproof leather is handmade in the hills of Italy and are built not only for style, but for comfortability and longevity.
Leather sandals are built to last. They are far more durable than those made from synthetic materials and can last long after you purchase them. Leather footwear has been around for thousands of years, and for good reason. Being a natural material, leather is able to “breathe” and flex to the shape of your foot. This eliminates wear from friction not only on your feet, but on your shoes as well. This breathability and flex also make your leather sandals even more comfortable over time, making your quality leather sandals feel custom made after you break them in. Leather can easily be treated to increase its longevity.
As mentioned earlier, leather is a natural material – meaning it can be porous and “breathe.” Although all leather is water resistant to a degree, not all leather is truly waterproof. At Italeau, we have sourced the finest waterproof, stain resistant Italian leather designed for life on the go. We’ve partnered with expert artisans in Italy to create beautiful, comfortable, lasting shoes that are made to perform wherever the day takes you.
Essential to a comfortable pair of sandals is finding a good fit. Your sandals should be tight enough so as to not cause chafing - without being too tight. If your feet slip around the sandal as you walk, chances are you may size down.
A pair of sandals with a good cushion on them can make a world of difference in terms of comfort. Ultra-thick memory foam lined with leather is top tier comfort. The breathability of a leather lining allows for your feet to feel free instead of confined within sweaty synthetics. Soles with proper arch support will aid in comfort as well. Not only will your feet thank you for the support, but your back will as well.
At Italeau, we believe that if a shoe isn’t fully functional, it cannot be truly luxurious. We design each pair of Italian shoes with a supportive shape and memory foam insoles to offer the ultimate luxury of comfort all day long.
Leather sandals in one form or another have been around for thousands of years. If the fact that they’re still around after all this time doesn’t convince you that you need a pair... Well, you’ll just have to try them yourself. Leather sandals are not only superior in terms of comfort, but you will not have to choose form over function. You truly can have it all with leather sandals. There is a style to carry your feet through any occasion.
Sandals and slides can absolutely be dressed up. Read on for some outfit ideas.

Sandals can most definitely be worn in any season. In fact, in recent years, sandals in the Winter have become a trend in itself. There are many styles of fur lined sandals specifically made for winter wear that are growing in popularity. Possibly the most popular winter sandal look is socks with slides. Socks with sandals are no longer a faux pas. You can pair your coziest socks with some slides for the easiest and most comfortable winter sandal look. This look remarkably goes with almost anything – experiment with different socks for different outfits. Wool socks can be worn for extra warmth. Winter sandals don’t have to stop at slides. Wedges can be worn under a long coat for a cute winter friendly look. Strappy sandals that peek out from some wide legged flares, paired with a chunky cardigan can keep you looking casually cool. For especially cold weather, pair your sandals with tights or fleece lined leggings. Try some tights with a pop of color and really lean into your fashion forward winter sandal look.
Handmade Italian leather sandals reign far superior to their synthetic counterparts, but there are pros and cons to consider.
Pros:
Handmade longevity. Quality handcrafted leather sandals will undoubtedly last you a very long time. When purchasing a pair of handmade leather sandals, you’re not purchasing for the season but for years to come.
Material durability. Leather is a naturally durable material. Consider saddles, work boots, and belts. Although leather sandals don’t typically have the same rough and tumble reputation, the material is the same and holds the same durable qualities.
Everyday versatility. There are not many places where you cannot wear leather sandals, and you’d be hard pressed to find an outfit that doesn’t look good with them.
Environmentally friendly. Plastic or rubber sandals ultimately end up in a landfill where they will take years and years to break down.
Improved shape. We briefly touched on the natural breathability and flex that comes with leather – this allows leather sandals to mold to your feet making you feel like Cinderella.
Jobs provided. Handmade leather sandals give birth to opportunities for true artisans to perform their craft. At Italeau, we support traditional shoemaking artisans in preserving a craft passed down through generations. All our artisans in Italy are paid fair wages, protected and treated with dignity.
Cons.
Price tag. Handmade leather sandals may cost more than a synthetic pair. Thanks to their longevity though, they can still offer tremendous value if you consider the cost per use.
The hunt. Finding a quality pair of handmade shoes isn’t always as easy as walking into your nearest department store.
